Exploring Nature Article in ParentMap

I’ve got another article up in the ParentMap online edition.  It’s chock full of great ideas for getting outside when you don’t have a ton of time.  You’ll even see a few photos of my own kids mixed in. There is so much you can do even if you can’t take time for a day hike or camping trip.  If you try any of these activities, let me know, I’d love to hear how they work for you!

We try to do five hikes / month, but it kinda varies. We want to do at least one / week, but sommeiets we just are too busy. Other times we manage several per week, so it evens out.We are definitely noticing an improvement now with elevation. When we first started, I’d have to stop on every other switchback or face falling down (I overheat worse than anyone I know). One of the last times I did a hike with lots of switchbacks, I only had to stop once! I was so proud of myself.Even better is seeing the changes in my shape / strength from hiking so much. It’s very nice that most of the areas here we hike don’t have bugs too. There’s a few that I want to do in early fall that are supposed to be buggy, but I’m hoping it will be better then (heh).I don’t think I’ve been to Indian Lake! Right before we moved, we did a few hikes at Devil’s Lake and the up on part of that nearly killed me (pant pant). Now, unless it was very humid out, I don’t even think I’d stop for a break unless I wanted to enjoy the view.

We try to get out every week for a hike, too, but admittedly it’s gotten harder as the kids have gotten older. It’s good to have that as a goal, though. The best way to get in shape for hiking is to hike! So good for you for continuing to get out there as much as you can.
