The Hiker Mama

Fisherman’s Bay Preserve

Distance: There are about 1.25 miles of trails on the spit.

Elevation Gain: Minimal

Season: Year-round

Maps: Find an online map here.

Description: Drive to the site of an old homestead and walk through the meadows and down to the spit. The Spit protects Fisherman Bay, and is a great place to stretch your legs and view the other San Juan Islands. You can see across to Lopez Village, as well. Boat skeletons decorate the end of the Spit, while seals and birds float off shore. There is an outhouse at the parking area.

Directions: From the Lopez Ferry Dock, head south on the main road. The road winds around a bit, and after 2 miles changes to Fisherman Bay Road. Drive past Lopez Village (it’s a great place to get groceries or coffee), and turn right onto Bayshore Road just after the 6 mile mark. This road winds around the bay, and you’ll pass another public park. Turn left on Peninsula Road, and follow it through a residential area (pay attention to the signs to stay on the correct road and don’t drive into people’s driveways). The road ends at the parking area. No permits are needed to park.
